This year’s Consumer Electronic Show (CES2017) has been fairly dominated by the virtual assistants. Among them Amazon Alexa has ruled over the entire event, at-least what looks like from the buzz. Internet of Things is fast catching up using real applications with real world scenarios. From personal assistants to IoT Integrated Shopping, the experience and convenience are both chasing up.
What is Alexa?
Alexa is a personal assistant accompanying Amazon’s Echo smart speakers. The voice over technology is built around Artificial intelligence. AI has become so mature that it is easy to interface smart devices with humans. Alexa is one such success example.
Why Alexa? Yes, that’s the question intriguing every other curious mind. Being an Amazon launch it’s expected that an online retailer company solely associated with history of not-so-patchy hardware shippings would come up with something like this. For the past years, the renowned companies like Apple and Google have always shined at the CES.This year Alexa by Amazon has played a clean sweep and made its mark.
Voice Recognition & Smartphone
There has been a growing incorporation of voice recognition softwares in smartphones and other devices, Amazon has succeeded at realizing the potential market for AI-based personal assistant that could make life a lot easier. Being the pioneer with the technology release Amazon has really taken over. Although there are a number of other personal assistants available but their creators have not marketed them in the best possible ways.
Not only this, manufacturers who are planning to adopt Alexa in their future products have been given an added benefit of altering the AI with a little bit of programming, tailoring to their needs. Yes, Amazon is giving away this liberty to get what you need by making changes to the AI. With over more than 8000 Alexa Skills, now there is a flexibility of third-party integrations. There are many companies which provide such integrations with their technology. But with IoT this is one of its kind success.
Albeit, attaining an immense hype this year, Alexa surely has its rivals.
Google for instance has made a huge progress and money with the introduction of Android OS. The search engine is, not to forget, equipped with the voice recognition based search, it’s quite awkward that Google has been lacking a personal virtual assistant feature all this time. Finally it has kicked in with Google Home, but it’s pretty evident who is on the lead.
Nvidia’s Shield & Microsoft’s Cortana
At the CES, Nvidia has announced that it would incorporate Google’s assistant for its upcoming media streaming device – Shield. Shield would be able to operate the smart lights as well as the smart thermostat.Microsoft has introduced Cortana that is supported by Windows 10 devices and features the Harman Kordon Speaker.
Every company is restless with AI at hand, Samsung has acquired Viv and planning to launch the AI technology in its upcoming galaxy S8 smartphone in 2017.
Back to Alexa
A child friendly tech brand announced Aristotle which has been programmed using Alexa, training children to say please in order to get their commands answered.
The AI technology is reforming the world, it’s a never ending battle in which every big company is striving to stand out. Despite being launched a few years back, Siri also has its standing in the world of AI. many different home devices were shown to be compatible with Siri.
Putting it all together, Alexa has an edge of smashing its rivals because none of them have hit the market, the way it hit at CES2017. Other companies are yet busy working with the AI, Alexa, however, has a number of capabilities that can be utilized, by the time other competitors will come after Alexa the development would have gone far. In addition to,its features, the time of launch is the biggest factor aiding its success.
