We’re all already familiar with the eCommerce giant known as Amazon, right? And you’ve probably already heard that its founder, Jeff Bezos, has recently become the richest person on the planet. But his ideas and goals about the beginning of Amazon were actually a lot more modest. He just wanted to make an online bookstore, that ended up spiraling into one of the biggest online stores worldwide.
It’s been around since 1994, and from a bookstore, it slowly developed to sell video, MP3 and audiobook downloads and streams. Then software, video games, electronics, apparel and other products were introduced. Later on, Amazon started producing consumer electronics, such as Kindle eBook readers, the Fire TV, Fire tablets and even Echo, a smart home center. Amazon also became the world’s largest provider of cloud infrastructure services.
Back in 2015, Amazon surpassed Walmart and became the most valuable retailer in the USA by market capitalization. The company is also the fourth most valuable in the world, and the largest internet company by revenue. Last year, it even acquired the Whole Foods Market and this year, it opened its first grocery store with no cashiers and checkout stations called Amazon Go.
Amazon currently has only one real store, located in Seattle, but if we consider how the company has grown over the years, this business is going to grow as well. Amazon expands its network of partners and products constantly. For example, last year it partnered up with the Australian shoe retailer Styletread, diversifying its reach and portfolio even more.
But back to the platform itself, Amazon has over 300 million active users and sells over 3 billion products every single month. Additionally, over 1 million products are added to its store every day, and by 2020, it is expected to sell over 12 billion products. That’s more than the entire population of the planet!
The average Amazon customer tends to spend about $700 per year, and with good reason. The company recently started offering a service called Amazon Prime, a paid subscription service that gives users in many big cities around the world access to almost-instant two-day delivery and various music and video streams that are available on the platform.
As of last year, Amazon Prime had more than 80 million paying users.
There are over 2 million sellers on Amazon, and there are plenty who make $100,000 or more in sales. Amazon even started delivering some packages via drones, with record delivery time of 14 minutes and 8 seconds, recorded in Birmingham.
And this is just a fraction of the facts about Amazon that you can find in this infographic below!
